Target Information
The protein encoded by this gene belongs to the UDP-glycosyltransferase family, which catalyzes biotransformation reactions where lipophilic substrates are conjugated with glucuronic acid to increase water solubility and enhance excretion.
These enzymes play a major role in conjugation and elimination of potentially toxic xenobiotics and endogenous compounds.
UD2A1 is expressed in the olfactory neuroepithelium, exposed to odorants and airborne toxic compounds, and may help clear lipophilic odorant molecules.
Alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been identified.
This gene shares exon structure with UDP glucuronosyltransferase 2A2, which encodes N-terminally distinct isoforms.
