Target Information
Importin 9 functions as a nuclear transport receptor involved in nuclear protein import. It serves as a receptor for nuclear localization signals (NLS) in cargo substrates and mediates docking of the importin/substrate complex to the nuclear pore complex (NPC). The complex is translocated through the pore via a Ran-dependent mechanism.
At the nucleoplasmic side, Ran binds to importin, causing dissociation of the importin/substrate complex. Importin is then re-exported to the cytoplasm, where GTP hydrolysis releases Ran.
Importin 9 mediates the nuclear import of H2B histone, RPS7, and RPL18A, preventing cytoplasmic aggregation of RPS7 and RPL18A by shielding exposed basic domains. It may also import H2A, H3, H4 histones, RPL4, and RPL6.
