Target Information
Voltage-gated potassium (Kv) channels represent one of the most complex classes of voltage-gated ion channels, both functionally and structurally. Their diverse roles include:
- Regulating neurotransmitter release
- Controlling heart rate and insulin secretion
- Modulating neuronal excitability and epithelial electrolyte transport
- Influencing smooth muscle contraction and cell volume
This gene encodes a member of the potassium channel, voltage-gated, isk-related subfamily.
It is a small integral membrane subunit that assembles with the KCNH2 gene product (a pore-forming protein) to alter its function.
KCNE2 is expressed in heart and muscle, and mutations are associated with cardiac arrhythmia.
