Comprehensive Design

Rats are an important model organism for studying human disease. To ensure relevance to transcriptome research, this array is based on the most recent genome content for generating genome-wide expression profiles.

The GeneChip™ Gene ST family of arrays offers a unique design advantage. Unlike traditional arrays that use probes targeting the 3′ end of transcripts, Gene ST arrays include hundreds of thousands of probes covering every exon of each transcript.
This comprehensive coverage (median of 22 probes per gene) enables accurate detection of genome-wide transcript expression changes, providing higher resolution and accuracy than classical 3′-biased microarrays.

Whole-transcript analysis allows detection of multiple transcript isoforms, including splice variants, non-polyadenylated transcripts, transcripts with alternative polyadenylation sites, and truncated transcripts.

Content Profile

Since the design of Rat Gene 1.1 ST Array Plates, structural and functional understanding of the rat genome has expanded significantly, including identification of numerous long intergenic non-coding RNAs (lincRNAs).
To measure differential expression of these RNA classes, the Rat Gene 2.1 ST Array Plates (sold separately) were developed.
