Target Information
The WFDC1 gene encodes a member of the WAP-type four disulfide core domain family.
This domain contains eight cysteines forming four disulfide bonds at the protein core and functions as a protease inhibitor.
The encoded protein shares 81% amino acid identity with the rat ps20 protein, originally identified as a secreted growth inhibitor.
WFDC1 is mapped to chromosome 16q24, a region often showing loss of heterozygosity in cancers such as prostate, breast, hepatocellular carcinoma, and Wilms’ tumor.
Due to its chromosomal location and potential growth inhibitory properties, this gene is suggested to function as a tumor suppressor gene.
