HFE2는 철 대사에 관여하며, hepcidin 활성화 신호 경로의 구성 요소로 작용하거나 hepcidin 발현 조절 인자로 기능할 수 있습니다. 또한 hepcidin의 세포 수용체로 작용할 가능성이 있습니다. 이 유전자는 다양한 아이소폼을 인코딩하는 대체 스플라이싱 전사체를 생성합니다. HFE2 결함은 제2형 혈색소증(juvenile hemochromatosis, JH)의 원인이 되며, 이는 심각한 철 과부하로 인한 조기 발병 자가 열성 질환입니다.
