Target Information
MEF2C is a transcription activator that binds specifically to the MEF2 element in the regulatory regions of many muscle-specific genes. It controls cardiac morphogenesis and myogenesis, and is involved in vascular development. MEF2C plays an essential role in hippocampal-dependent learning and memory by regulating excitatory synapse formation and synaptic transmission. It is crucial for normal neuronal development and activity in the neocortex, as well as for proper megakaryocyte and platelet development and bone marrow B lymphopoiesis. MEF2C is required for B-cell survival and proliferation, efficient IgG1 antibody responses, and normal germinal center formation. Isoform 3 and 4, lacking the repressor domain, are more active than isoform 1 and 2.
