B4GALT6는 beta-1,4-galactosyltransferase (beta4GalT) 계열의 유전자 중 하나로, UDP-galactose를 donor substrate로 사용하여 galactose를 β1,4 결합 형태로 전달합니다. 각 beta4GalT는 다양한 glycoconjugate와 saccharide 구조의 생합성에서 고유한 기능을 수행합니다. 이 유전자는 glycolipid 생합성에 중요한 lactosylceramide synthase를 암호화합니다.
