Target Information
Secretory carrier membrane proteins (SCAMPs) are components of post-Golgi membranes involved in membrane trafficking. In fibroblasts, SCAMPs are concentrated in compartments associated with recycling of cell surface receptors and endocytosis. In neurons, SCAMPs are found in synaptic vesicles, secretion granules, and transporter vesicles.
SCAMPs contain four transmembrane regions and a cytoplasmic tail. SCAMPs 1–3 have N-terminal NPF repeats that interact with EH domain proteins, aiding vesicle budding from the plasma membrane or Golgi complex. SCAMPs 4 and 5 lack these repeats. SCAMPs 1–4 are ubiquitously expressed, while SCAMP 5 is brain-specific and expressed late in development, coinciding with synapse maturation.
