Target Information
The protein encoded by this gene is a lysosomal cysteine proteinase involved in intracellular protein catabolism. Its substrates include collagen, elastin, and alpha-1 protease inhibitor, a regulator of neutrophil elastase activity. This protein is associated with pathological processes such as myofibril necrosis in myopathies, myocardial ischemia, and renal tubular responses to proteinuria. It belongs to the peptidase C1 family and forms a disulfide-linked dimer of heavy and light chains derived from a single precursor. Multiple transcript variants encoding the same protein have been identified.
