Background
Keratin 8 (KRT8) is a member of the type II keratin family clustered on chromosome 12. Type I and type II keratins form intermediate filaments in epithelial cells. KRT8 typically dimerizes with keratin 18 to form filaments in simple epithelial cells, contributing to cellular structural integrity, signal transduction, and differentiation. Mutations in KRT8 are associated with cryptogenic cirrhosis. Alternatively spliced transcript variants exist.
