Background
The protein encoded by this gene belongs to the highly conserved cyclin family, characterized by periodic changes in protein abundance through the cell cycle. Cyclins regulate CDK kinases, and distinct cyclins exhibit specific expression and degradation patterns that coordinate mitotic events temporally.
Cyclin E1 forms a complex with CDK2, acting as a regulatory subunit essential for the G1/S transition. It accumulates at the G1-S phase boundary and is degraded during S phase. Overexpression of this gene has been observed in many tumors, leading to chromosomal instability and potential tumorigenesis.
This protein also associates with NPAT (nuclear protein mapped to the ATM locus), participating in its phosphorylation.
