Cellular Localization Nucleus, Cytoplasm, Mitochondrion, Cytoskeleton (microtubule organizing center, centrosome, spindle). Cytoplasmic during interphase. Colocalizes with SIRT2 on centrosome during prophase and on spindle fibers during metaphase. Translocates to nucleus when phosphorylated before G2-M transition with cyclin-B1. Accumulates in mitochondria in G2-arrested cells upon DNA damage.

Background

Cyclin dependent kinase 1 (CDK1) is a member of the Ser/Thr protein kinase family and serves as the catalytic subunit of the M-phase promoting factor (MPF), essential for G1/S and G2/M phase transitions in the eukaryotic cell cycle. Mitotic cyclins associate with CDK1 as regulatory subunits. The kinase activity of CDK1 is regulated by cyclin accumulation and degradation, as well as phosphorylation and dephosphorylation events that control cell cycle progression. Alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been identified (RefSeq, Mar 2009).
