Background
A reciprocal translocation between chromosomes 22 and 9 produces the Philadelphia chromosome, commonly found in chronic myelogenous leukemia patients. The breakpoint on chromosome 22 lies within the BCR gene, resulting in a fusion protein encoded by both BCR and ABL genes. While the BCR-ABL fusion protein has been extensively studied, the normal BCR protein’s function remains unclear. It possesses serine/threonine kinase activity and acts as a GTPase-activating protein for p21rac. Two transcript variants encoding distinct isoforms have been identified for this gene.
