Background
The protein encoded by this gene is a member of the BCL-2 family, known regulators of programmed cell death. BAD promotes apoptosis by forming heterodimers with BCL-xL and BCL-2, counteracting their anti-apoptotic effects. Its pro-apoptotic activity is regulated through phosphorylation by kinases such as AKT and MAP kinase, and dephosphorylation by calcineurin. Alternative splicing produces two transcript variants encoding the same isoform.
