| Background | The protein encoded by this gene is a member of the BCL-2 family, known for regulating programmed cell death. This protein promotes apoptosis by forming heterodimers with BCL-xL and BCL-2, counteracting their anti-apoptotic effects. Its pro-apoptotic activity is regulated by phosphorylation through kinases such as AKT and MAPK, and phosphatase calcineurin.
