Background

Histones are basic nuclear proteins responsible for the nucleosome structure of chromosomal fibers in eukaryotes. Each nucleosome consists of approximately 146 bp of DNA wrapped around an octamer composed of pairs of H2A, H2B, H3, and H4 core histones. The chromatin fiber is further compacted through interactions with linker histone H1, forming higher-order chromatin structures. The Histone H3 gene is intronless and encodes a replication-dependent histone found in the large histone gene cluster on chromosome 6p22-p21.3. Transcripts from this gene lack polyA tails and contain a palindromic termination element.
