Background
Histones are basic nuclear proteins responsible for the nucleosome structure of chromosomal fibers in eukaryotes. Approximately 146 bp of DNA wraps around a nucleosome, an octamer composed of pairs of the four core histones (H2A, H2B, H3, and H4). Chromatin fibers are further compacted through interactions with linker histone H1 to form higher-order structures. This gene is intronless and encodes a replication-dependent histone H3 family member. Transcripts lack polyA tails and contain a palindromic termination element. The gene is located within the large histone gene cluster on chromosome 6p22-p21.3 (RefSeq, Aug 2015).
