Background
Integrin subunit alpha V (ITGAV) belongs to the integrin alpha chain family. Integrins are heterodimeric integral membrane proteins composed of alpha and beta subunits that mediate cell adhesion and signaling. The alpha V subunit associates with beta 1, beta 3, beta 5, beta 6, and beta 8 subunits, forming heterodimers such as the vitronectin receptor (αVβ3). This integrin is implicated in angiogenesis and cancer progression. Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants. Note that integrin alpha 5 and alpha V are encoded by distinct genes.
