Background

Cyclooxygenase-1 (COX-1), also known as prostaglandin G/H synthase 1, prostaglandin-endoperoxide synthase 1, or prostaglandin H2 synthase 1, is an enzyme encoded by the PTGS1 gene in humans.
There are two COX isozymes encoded by distinct gene products: constitutive COX-1 and inducible COX-2, which differ in regulation and tissue distribution.
Expression of these transcripts is differentially regulated by cytokines and growth factors.
A splice variant termed COX-3 was identified in the CNS of dogs but does not result in a functional protein in humans.
Two smaller COX-1-derived proteins (PCOX-1A and PCOX-1B) have also been discovered, though their roles remain unclear.

Additionally, Galectin 3, a 30 kDa protein with a C-terminal carbohydrate binding site, can bind IgE and mammalian cell surfaces when homodimerized or homooligomerized.
It is found in epithelia of many organs and inflammatory cells such as macrophages, dendritic cells, and Kupffer cells.
Galectin 3 expression increases during inflammation, cell proliferation, differentiation, and viral trans-activation.
