Target Information
EXOSC5 is a non-catalytic component of the RNA exosome complex with 3'→5' exoribonuclease activity, participating in diverse RNA processing and degradation events.
In the nucleus, it is involved in:
- Maturation of stable RNA species (rRNA, snRNA, snoRNA)
- Elimination of RNA processing by-products and non-coding pervasive transcripts (e.g., antisense RNA, PROMPTs)
- Degradation of defective mRNAs to prevent cytoplasmic export
In the cytoplasm, it functions in:
- General mRNA turnover
- Degradation of unstable mRNAs with AU-rich elements (AREs)
- RNA surveillance to prevent translation of aberrant mRNAs
- Degradation of histone mRNA
The catalytic inactive RNA exosome core complex (Exo-9) acts as a scaffold for RNA binding and presentation for ribonucleolysis and association with catalytic subunits and accessory proteins.
