Target Information
Beta-catenin is an adherens junction (AJ) protein, originally identified as a component of cell-cell adhesion structures. AJs are essential for the creation and maintenance of epithelial cell layers by regulating cell growth and adhesion. Beta-catenin interacts with E-cadherin and alpha-catenin, linking the E-cadherin complex to the actin cytoskeleton. It also binds to cytoskeletal complexes containing adenomatous polyposis coli protein and microtubules, participating in signaling pathways such as Wnt/Wingless.
Beta-catenin expression is observed in various hair follicle cells and epithelial structures. Pathological roles are reported in pilomatrixoma, medulloblastoma, colorectal cancer, ovarian cancer, and tumor development. In the nucleus, beta-catenin co-activates Lef/Tcf transcription factors, promoting expression of cyclin D and c-myc, key regulators of cell proliferation and tumorigenesis.
