Target Information

Alpha Actinin 1 belongs to the spectrin gene superfamily, a diverse group of cytoskeletal proteins including alpha/beta spectrins and dystrophins.
Alpha actinin is an actin-binding protein with multiple roles in different cell types.

• In nonmuscle cells: localized along microfilament bundles and adherens-type junctions, binding actin to the membrane
• In muscle cells: localized to the Z-disc and dense bodies, anchoring myofibrillar actin filaments
• Encodes a nonmuscle, cytoskeletal alpha actinin isoform
• Maps near the erythroid beta spectrin gene
• Three transcript variants encoding different isoforms identified
