Target Information
BST2 (also known as CD317, HM1.24 antigen, DAMP-2, tetherin) is an integral membrane protein involved in B-cell development and growth. Its expression on fibroblast cell lines supports stromal cell-dependent growth of pre-B-cell lines. BST2 is highly expressed throughout B-cell maturation, as well as in T-cells, monocytes, NK cells, dendritic cells, and myeloma cells.
Research indicates BST2 inhibits retrovirus release from human cells, an effect counteracted by the HIV-1 accessory protein Vpu. BST2 retains virions on cell surfaces or mediates their endocytosis, and depletion of BST2 eliminates the need for Vpu in viral release—suggesting potential therapeutic relevance for HIV/AIDS.
Dysfunction of BST2 has also been associated with stomatitis.
