FARS2 encodes a mitochondrial phenylalanine-tRNA synthetase (PheRS) consisting of a single polypeptide chain, unlike the (α-β)₂ structure of the cytoplasmic forms.
Structural and catalytic analyses indicate mitochondrial PheRSs may form a distinct class compared to prokaryotic and cytoplasmic eukaryotic enzymes.
