Target Information

This gene belongs to the septin family of nucleotide-binding proteins, originally described in yeast as cell division cycle regulatory proteins. Septins are conserved across species and are involved in cytoskeletal organization. Disruption of septin function can interfere with cytokinesis, leading to multinucleate or polyploid cells.

The SEPT5 gene is located on chromosome 22q11, a region frequently deleted in DiGeorge and velocardiofacial syndromes. Translocation events involving SEPT5 and the MLL gene have been reported in acute myeloid leukemia. Two main transcripts (2.2 kb and 3.5 kb) are known, differing by polyadenylation signal usage. An alternatively spliced variant with a distinct 5′ end has also been identified.
