This gene encodes a complex glycoprotein secreted in plasma. The precursor is proteolytically processed into distinct functioning proteins:

Alpha-1-microglobulin: Belongs to the lipocalin superfamily, may regulate inflammatory processes.
Bikunin: Urinary trypsin inhibitor, part of the Kunitz-type protease inhibitor superfamily, involved in multiple physiological and pathological processes.

Located on chromosome 9 within a cluster of lipocalin genes.
