Target Information

Calnexin, also referred to as IP90, p88, and p90, is an approximately 90 kDa integral membrane protein of the endoplasmic reticulum (ER).
Many ER-resident proteins act as molecular chaperones, assisting in proper folding and assembly of polypeptides.
Calnexin associates with MHC class I heavy chains and partial complexes of T cell receptors and B cell membrane immunoglobulins, but not with completed receptor complexes.
It functions as a chaperone, retaining incompletely or improperly folded proteins in the ER.
Soluble ER resident proteins often contain the KDEL sequence for ER retention, while integral membrane proteins like Calnexin lack KDEL but possess positively charged cytosolic residues ensuring retention.
Calnexin structure includes:

  • ER luminal domain (461 amino acids)
  • Transmembrane segment (22 amino acids)
  • Cytoplasmic tail (89 amino acids)
