Target Information

Ep-CAM (epithelial adhesion molecule, ESA) is a transmembrane glycoprotein (~40 kDa) expressed in epithelial tissues. It functions as a calcium-independent cell adhesion molecule and influences cell cycle, proliferation, and metabolism through activation of proto-oncogene c-myc and cyclins A and E.
Ep-CAM-mediated adhesions negatively regulate cadherin-mediated interactions, affecting epithelial differentiation and growth. Overexpression of Ep-CAM correlates with enhanced epithelial proliferation and is common in human carcinomas, serving as a marker for epithelial lineage tumors.
Ep-CAM is expressed on basolateral surfaces of most simple epithelia and various carcinoma types, and can distinguish adenocarcinomas from pleural mesotheliomas.
