Target Information
SMURF2 is an E3 ubiquitin-protein ligase that transfers ubiquitin from an E2 conjugating enzyme to target substrates. It interacts with SMAD1, SMAD2, and SMAD7 to promote their ubiquitination and proteasomal degradation. SMURF2 enhances the inhibitory activity of SMAD7 and reduces the transcriptional activity of SMAD2. Coexpression with SMAD1 significantly decreases SMAD1 protein levels and modestly reduces SMAD2 levels.
