Target Information

p73 protein is a member of the p53 family of proteins. The tumor-suppressor protein p53 exhibits sequence-specific DNA binding, interacts with various cellular and viral proteins, and induces cell cycle arrest in response to DNA damage. In response to genotoxic stresses such as UV irradiation or DNA damage, p53 undergoes post-translational modification leading to nuclear accumulation. Activation of p53 can result in cell cycle arrest or apoptosis, preventing proliferation of genetically damaged cells. Thus, p53-dependent pathways help maintain genomic stability by eliminating damaged cells. High levels of p53 accumulation may serve as a potential marker for malignancy.
