Target Information
Fatty acid binding proteins (FABP) are small (approximately 13–14 kDa) intracellular proteins with a high degree of tissue specificity. FABPs are cytoplasmic proteins that bind long-chain fatty acids and are abundantly present in various cell types. They play an important role in the intracellular utilization of fatty acids.
There are at least six distinct types of FABP, each showing a specific pattern of tissue expression. Due to their small size, FABPs leak rapidly from chemically damaged or dying cells, leading to elevated serum levels. Liver FABP is a sensitive marker for liver cell damage both in vitro and in vivo. Damaged tissues show low or absent FABP expression, aiding histological identification. L-FABP is also a marker for hepatocyte lysis in toxicology assays and for detecting liver damage during and after transplantation.
