Target Information
Elliptocytosis is a hematologic disorder characterized by elliptically shaped erythrocytes and a variable degree of hemolytic anemia. It is inherited as an autosomal dominant trait and results from mutations in genes encoding red cell membrane skeleton proteins. The form linked to the Rh blood group is caused by a defect in protein 4.1, while Rh-unlinked forms of elliptocytosis are caused by mutations in the alpha-spectrin, beta-spectrin, or band 3 genes.
