APOL1 is a secreted high-density lipoprotein that binds to apolipoprotein A-I, a major component of HDL. It plays a key role in cholesteryl ester formation and cholesterol efflux from cells. The apolipoprotein L family may contribute to lipid exchange, transport, and reverse cholesterol transport from peripheral tissues to the liver.
