Target Information

Vascular endothelial growth factors (VEGFs) are a family of closely related growth factors characterized by eight conserved cysteine residues and shared VEGF receptors. VEGFs stimulate endothelial cells, induce angiogenesis, promote cell migration, increase vascular permeability, and inhibit apoptosis.

VEGFB has structural similarities to VEGF and PIGF and is frequently co-expressed with VEGF. Two alternatively spliced isoforms exist: VEGFB 167 and VEGFB 186.

• VEGFB 167: Highly basic, heparin-binding, remains associated with the cell or extracellular matrix.
• VEGFB 186: Readily secreted.

VEGFB stimulates endothelial cell proliferation and binds specifically to the tyrosine kinase receptor VEGFR1 (flt1), but not VEGFR2. It is widely expressed, most abundantly in the heart, skeletal muscle, and pancreas. VEGFB expression in human primary breast cancers has been associated with lymph node metastasis. The gene encoding VEGFB is mapped to chromosome 11q13.
