Target Information
Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and assist in protein synthesis within the mitochondrion. Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) consist of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit, with an estimated 75% protein to rRNA ratio—opposite to that of prokaryotic ribosomes. Unlike prokaryotic ribosomes, mammalian mitoribosomes lack a 5S rRNA. Proteins comprising the mitoribosome vary significantly among species, complicating recognition by sequence homology. The MRPL11 gene encodes a 39S subunit protein, and sequence analysis identified three transcript variants encoding different isoforms. Pseudogenes corresponding to this gene are found on chromosomes 5q and 12q.
