Target Information
The androgen receptor (AR) is a member of the steroid-hormone receptor superfamily of nuclear receptors. It is a ligand-activated transcription factor that binds testosterone (T) and dihydrotestosterone (DHT). Upon ligand binding, the receptor translocates to the nucleus, dimerizes, and activates transcription of androgen-responsive genes. AR signaling is critical for development and function of male reproductive organs and also affects nonreproductive tissues such as muscle, hair follicles, and brain.
AR is a phosphoprotein that regulates MAP kinase signaling, and abnormal AR activity has been linked to prostate cancer, Kennedy’s disease, and male infertility. Mutations in the AR gene are associated with complete androgen insensitivity (CAIS).
