Target Information
Calpains, including Calpain 1 (CAPN1), are calcium-activated neutral proteases functioning as nonlysosomal intracellular cysteine proteases. Mammalian calpains include ubiquitous, stomach-specific, and muscle-specific forms. The ubiquitous enzymes are heterodimers composed of distinct large catalytic subunits and a common small regulatory subunit.
The Calpain 12 gene encodes the large subunit of the ubiquitous enzyme calpain 1. Multiple transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been identified.
Diseases associated with CAPN1 include Spastic Paraplegia 76, Autosomal Recessive and Spasticity.
