Target Information
BCL-XL is a member of the BCL-2 protein family that forms hetero- or homodimers and acts as an anti- or pro-apoptotic regulator involved in various cellular activities. It is located at the outer mitochondrial membrane and regulates the opening of the mitochondrial membrane channel (VDAC). VDAC controls mitochondrial membrane potential, reactive oxygen species production, and cytochrome C release, all of which are key in cell apoptosis. Two alternatively spliced transcript variants encode distinct isoforms: the longer isoform inhibits apoptosis, while the shorter form promotes it.
