DENND5A는 guanine nucleotide exchange factor (GEF)로서 RAB6A 및 RAB39A/RAB39B를 활성화합니다. 이는 GDP 결합형 불활성 Rab 단백질을 GTP 결합형 활성 형태로 전환하여 GDP를 GTP로 교환하는 역할을 합니다. 또한 신경돌기(neurite) 성장의 음성 조절에도 관여합니다. 이 유전자의 돌연변이는 조기 영아기 발작뇌병증(EIEE49)을 유발할 수 있습니다.
