Target Information
Dyneins are multi-subunit, high molecular weight ATPases that interact with microtubules to generate force by converting the chemical energy of ATP into mechanical movement. Cytoplasmic or axonemal dynein heavy, intermediate, light, and light-intermediate chains are components of minus end-directed motors responsible for transporting cellular cargos toward the cell center.
Axonemal dynein motors contain one to three non-identical heavy chains and enable microtubule sliding in cilia and flagella, essential for ciliary beating and cell propulsion. Cytoplasmic dynein is a complex of approximately 12 subunits, including two heavy chains, two intermediate chains for cargo anchoring, four smaller intermediate chains, and several light chains. It plays crucial roles in organelle transport and centrosome assembly. The carboxy-terminus of dynein is conserved and important for microtubule-dependent motility, while the amino-terminal regions are more variable. Dynein activity is regulated by several proteins, including Dynactin, LIS1, and Nudel (NudE-like).
