Target Information
Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and assist in protein synthesis within mitochondria. Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) consist of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit, with approximately 75% protein to rRNA composition—opposite to prokaryotic ribosomes. Unlike prokaryotic ribosomes, mammalian mitoribosomes lack a 5S rRNA. The proteins comprising the mitoribosome differ significantly among species, making sequence homology recognition difficult.
This gene encodes a protein specific to animal mitoribosomes and is associated with pseudogenes on chromosomes 1p, 1q, 3p, 5q, 8q, 14q, and Y.
