Target Information
Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and play a key role in mitochondrial protein synthesis. Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) consist of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit, with approximately 75% protein to rRNA composition, contrasting with prokaryotic ribosomes. Prokaryotic ribosomes contain a 5S rRNA, which mammalian mitoribosomes lack. The 28S subunit of the mammalian mitoribosome may have a distinctive role in translation initiation. This gene encodes a 28S subunit protein potentially associated with type 1 diabetes, though the connection remains unclear. Pseudogenes have been identified on chromosomes 3 and 13.
