This antibody detects endogenous levels of total TNP2.

Target Information

During mammalian spermiogenesis, histones are transiently replaced by several low molecular weight proteins called transition proteins (TNPs). These proteins facilitate chromatin transformation from the nucleosome structure to the nucleoprotamine structure during spermatid differentiation.
Transition protein-2 (TNP2, TP2) maps to human chromosome 16p13.13 and encodes a highly basic nuclear protein. TNP2 is a spermatid-specific product of the haploid genome that replaces histone and is later replaced by protamines in mature sperm.
Although TNP2 is not essential for sperm nucleus shaping or fertility, it is crucial for proper protamine 2 processing and chromatin condensation. In the absence of TNP1, TNP2 may partially compensate, but this leads to abnormal chromatin condensation and reduced fertility.
