Target Information
This gene encodes the peroxisomal enzyme D-amino acid oxidase (DAO). The enzyme is a flavoprotein that uses flavin adenine dinucleotide (FAD) as its prosthetic group.
It acts on a variety of D-amino acids but is inactive on naturally occurring L-amino acids. The precise biological function is not fully known, but it may detoxify D-amino acids that accumulate during aging.
In mice, DAO degrades D-serine, a co-agonist of the NMDA receptor, and may play a role in the pathophysiology of schizophrenia.
