Human GSTs는 alpha, mu, pi, theta, zeta의 다섯 주요 클래스 중 하나로 분류됩니다. Theta 클래스에는 GSTT1 및 GSTT2가 포함되며, 두 단백질은 55% 아미노산 서열 동일성을 공유하고 인간 발암 과정에서 중요한 역할을 하는 것으로 알려져 있습니다. GSTT1 유전자는 GSTT2 유전자에서 약 50kb 떨어진 위치에 있으며, 두 유전자는 5개의 엑손으로 구성된 유사한 구조를 가집니다.
