This antibody has specificity for Human BPI.

Target Information

The antimicrobial protein BPI (Bactericidal/Permeability-Increasing protein) is a 55 kDa protein found in the primary (azurophilic) granules of human neutrophils and is also detected on the surface of neutrophils, small intestinal, and oral epithelial cells.
BPI binds with high affinity to the lipid A region of lipopolysaccharides (LPS) in gram-negative bacterial membranes, leading to multiple anti-infective activities such as:

• Cytotoxicity via damage to bacterial membranes
• Neutralization of LPS
• Opsonization to enhance phagocytosis by neutrophils

BPI may play a critical role in LPS-triggered airway diseases and inflammation related to hematopoietic cell transplantation.
A recombinant fragment, rBPI21 (21 kDa), has shown protective effects against invasive pneumococcal disease by binding to pneumolysin, a gram-positive bacterial toxin.
