Target Information
The HMG-box protein-1 (HBP1) is a member of the HMG family of transcription factors, characterized by the presence of a conserved high mobility group (HMG) 1 box that mediates DNA binding.
HBP1 binds to tumor suppressor proteins Rb and p130 to initiate cell cycle arrest. This arrest is essential for terminal cell differentiation, which involves the expression of tissue-specific genes.
HBP1 also interacts with MyoD proteins, modulating the expression of muscle-specific genes. The progression of terminal differentiation depends on decreased HBP1 activity and activation of MyoD-induced gene transcription.
