Background
Olfactory receptor family 2 subfamily A member 5 (OR2A5) is a human olfactory receptor that interacts with odorant molecules in the nose to initiate a neuronal response leading to smell perception. These receptors belong to the large family of G-protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) derived from single coding-exon genes. Olfactory receptors share a 7-transmembrane domain structure with many neurotransmitter and hormone receptors and are responsible for recognizing and transducing odorant signals via G proteins. The olfactory receptor gene family is the largest in the genome, and the nomenclature assigned to these genes and proteins is organism-specific (RefSeq, Jul 2008).
