Background
Olfactory receptor family 6 subfamily B member 3 (OR6B3) is a human olfactory receptor that interacts with odorant molecules in the nose to initiate neuronal responses responsible for smell perception. These receptors belong to the large family of G-protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) derived from single coding-exon genes. They share a 7-transmembrane domain structure with many neurotransmitter and hormone receptors and mediate odorant signal transduction through G proteins. The olfactory receptor gene family is the largest in the genome, and the nomenclature for this organism is independent of other species (RefSeq, Jul 2008).
